The power of rest

Meeting Kate for the first time online, I planned to do a quick bit of prep ahead of our podcast recording - going through the practicals and reassuring her I wasn't a weirdo. That might have undone itself. When I asked Kate what she wanted to chat about - she described something that seriously resonated. As I did some low level weeping (not again Rach) through our first video call, she calmly expressed how the understanding of seasons - and their distinct functions - gives us the grace and freedom to be creative and work in tune with ourselves. Mainstream business culture doesn't really hold space for that concept. Kate takes the time to explain how each season of nature, when applied to our work and creative patterns - sets us up for a much healthier, rounded life. And enables us to counter burn out and productivity busy-ness.

Winter requires space. Rest. And Slack jawed dribbling. The requirement is surrender. Because everything emerges from winter.
Everything comes out of nothing. This nothingness is the place, from which everything arises. That's why we burn out. Because we're empty.

In our conversation, Kate explains how each season in nature, when applied to how we create and make things; enables us to work and rest at a much healthier pace. I had my lightbulb moment for why this touched me: for many years I tended to operate in Spring & Summer modes. I was very able to generate ideas and then make them happen. But had a blindspot for giving Autumn & Winter (refinement & rest) the proper time and space they deserved. As I've shared elsewhere, this caught up with me in 2019, with epic burnout that took nearly two years to recover from.

If there wasn't shame about periods and if people were able to trust their bodies more... Women would be less manic & do less. We'd teach other people how not to burn out.
